Availability Zones

Architectural Foundation & Systems Diagram

Cloud computing is the on-demand delivery of IT resources over the Internet with pay-as-you-go pricing. AWS organizes its global infrastructure into hierarchical resilience zones:

  • 🌍 AWS Regions — A physical geographic location in the world containing multiple isolated datacenters (e.g. us-east-1 N. Virginia, ap-south-1 Mumbai, eu-west-1 Ireland).

  • 🏢 Availability Zones (AZs) — One or more discrete datacenters with redundant power, networking, and connectivity. Spaced miles apart to protect against single natural disasters!

  • 🛡️ Fault Tolerance & Multi-AZ — Never deploy all production workloads in a single AZ! Deploying across 2 or more AZs behind a Load Balancer ensures that if an entire datacenter floods, your site stays 100% online.

Step-by-step practical lab

Step 01: Query AWS Instance Metadata Service (IMDS)

Query the AWS EC2 instance metadata service (IMDS) to discover instance ID, availability zone, and private IP.

ExampleShell
curl -s http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/instance-id

Expected output

Output
i-0a1b2c3d4e5f67890

SRE Tip: Automated provisioning scripts query IMDS at boot to determine which AWS Region and Availability Zone they are running in.

Hands-on practice activities

Work through these yourself — tick them off as you go.

  • Activity 46: Understand Multi-AZ Architecture (Checkpoint) — Never deploy all production instances in a single AZ. Always spread across at least 2 Availability Zones behind an Application Load Balancer (ALB).
  • Activity 47: Terminate Instances After Practice (Checkpoint) — Remember the instructor's critical warning: EC2 instances charge by the hour! Always STOP or TERMINATE your practice instances when you finish your lab.
  • Activity 48: Region Selection Criteria (Checkpoint) — Evaluate data sovereignty laws (e.g. GDPR) and latency when choosing an AWS Region for customer data.
  • Activity 49: Disaster Recovery (DR) RTO & RPO (Checkpoint) — Recovery Time Objective (RTO) = how fast you recover; Recovery Point Objective (RPO) = how much data loss is tolerable.
  • Activity 50: AWS AZ Isolation Quiz (Quiz) — Why does a single AWS Region contain multiple Availability Zones? Answer: For high availability, fault tolerance, and disaster resilience.
